After ep 18, I posted this theory. After watching ep 19, I have a lot to add. Idk if anyone really reads what I post, but I need to get this out there.
Okay, so now we can’t really deny that yes, Ward is indeed a Hydra agent. Yes, Ward knew that Garrett was the…
Yea I’m definitely worried that their relationship will never recover from it, and I think unless Ward does something major to show that his alliances have shifted, to a dramatic extent like taking a bullet for the team or something, it will be hard for Skye to even begin to forgive him. However, despite all the things that Skye has had taken from her (her family, each foster home she was in, Miles, and now SHIELD), I’m not as worried for Skye. She’s very resilient. She’s proved that already. She’s accustomed to losing the people and things that matter to her, and as sad as that is, it’s made her a lot tougher. She can survive this. I’m not sure Grant can.
Also, I thought you brought up a good point about Ward’s true identity. When Skye is wiping his identity, and he’s unconcerned, he says “Well, it’s not the first time my identity’s been compromised.” It may or may not be his real name, and if it isn’t, it makes sense why he chose the name he did (Grant Ward literally means great guardian/ great protector, and believe me, writers don’t choose names idly). He wanted this to be his false identity; the protector. He protects his team, jumping out of a plane to gain their trust. He literally says to Maria Hill that what SHIELD means to him is about “protecting people.” And it wasn’t until he had a team around him that he realized he liked that identity better than the real one.
Even if Ward does something major to protect them, I’m worried it won’t be enough. Last time he did something major to protect the team (and not just Skye), he jumped out of a plane to save Simmons. And he said it himself that that was a calculated move to gain the trust of the team. So even if he does something big, how can the team be sure it’s a show of his loyalty and not just another manipulation? I think the only way they can be sure is if it’s something that either costs him his life (a horrible thought and I don’t want that) or a situation that could not have possibly been manipulated that puts Ward in a lot of danger. And I’m not sure the second one could completely erase doubts. Ward is a super spy con artist and he’s burned them before. The cost of that betrayal is high. And May’s “betrayal” had good intentions, came from Fury, and shows that she cares about Coulson, but Coulson still can’t forgive her. I’m not sure he’ll ever be able to forgive Ward. And he’s the father-figure so I’m not sure this can work out well. Fitz cried, but still told Garrett he was going to make sure he suffered. He was terrified and furious and I think he’s going to be hard to win back over. I’m not sure about Simmons. I don’t think May will forgive him easily, since he apparently manipulated her a lot (I’m still not convinced Ward “seduced” her because it’s Melinda May and I doubt Ward looking hot or talking to her would really convince her to do anything she wasn’t already planning to.). I think she also knows what super spies like him are capable of, so she’ll definitely be wary. If the rest of the team can’t forgive/trust Ward, can Skye? While she may be swayed by her feelings for him, defending or forgiving him could put her at odds with the team. And we know she loves them too. Also, Ward burned her like Miles and she dropped him immediately. She adapted to that situation. Maybe she’ll adapt to this too. Maybe she’ll cry herself to sleep one night and wake up the next morning resolved to restore SHIELD, resolved to forget “Grant Ward”. Maybe the next time Ward sees her, her eyes will be cool and calculating. Maybe her smile will cut like a knife and her words will circle around his chest and squeeze until he can’t breathe. Maybe Skye’s done being burned and Grant Ward will suffer for that.
I definitely agree that Skye is tougher and more likely to make it out of this somewhat intact. Though I think losing this team is even more significant than losing her previous ones simply because foster homes/etc. aren’t supposed to last. She probably knew, even at her young age, that those weren’t permanent homes. This team wasn’t supposed to become her family, but it did. She got her SHIELD badge, it was official, it was permanent. And now everything is falling apart and for once, her home was supposed to last. She is tough and she will work to get through it, but Ward’s role in destroying this family of hers is going to be very tough to deal with.
That’s a good point about the name choice. It definitely adds to the likelihood that it’s a cover. I’m curious as to what his real name is. (Are we going to have to change the ship name?) And if he does return to Coulson’s team in the end, do you think he’ll revert to his real name or will he leave that behind and resume his life as Grant Ward? If he does truly like “Grant Ward” better than the original, maybe he’ll stick with that. This is also interesting to think about when we consider Skye. We’re like 99% sure that’s not her real name. Maybe she likes Skye better than she likes the original her? Maybe both she and Ward want a new start and neither of them realized it until they joined Coulson’s team.
